Elizabeth Emmert, Assistant Professor of Electronic Media, regularly incorporates Career Development Center (CDC) events and services in her classroom instruction. She has invited CDC staff to give presentations on resumes, internships, interviews, and networking to her Senior Seminar classes. She encourages students who are applying for internships to meet with CDC staff and participate in mock interviews.

Through her work with the CDC, Emmert has found that class presentations and the Etiquette Dinner have been incredibly beneficial in assisting students with their career development. "Students should begin using CDC services in their junior and senior years," she said. "They should join College Central Network, and take advantage of all the sources the CDC offers."

Working with seniors seeking employment and internship opportunities, Emmert appreciates the importance of small details in career development. "I knew a straight-A student who went on an interview," she said. "She was dressed very nicely in a suit but wore flip-flops. Although she got the job she was informed by the interviewer that it was very inappropriate."

Emmert recalls another situation that did not turn out as well. "I had a student who sent a very informal email to a potential employer and was told that he will never get a job at that company because of it," she said. "When you email, write as you would a formal business letter."

Emmert trusts that the students who utilize CDC services will be prepared to conduct themselves professionally in any situation. However, she urges students to remember one important thing. "Be yourself," she said. "Know what you don’t know and be willing to admit it. Be willing to say ‘I don’t know.’"

In her work as a career advocate, Emmert has encouraged students to pursue their interests and build their futures through the CDC. Because of her efforts, more students are prepared for life after graduation
